Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: Which Drain Cleaning Method Is Right for Your Pipes?

Mechanical drain snaking, commonly called rooter service, has been the reliable workhorse of the plumbing trade for nearly a century. The machine rotates a heavy steel flexible cable tipped with specialized cutting blades—such as C-cutters, spade blades, or expanding retrieve spirals—powered by an electric motor.

When fed through an exterior cleanout or roof vent, the spinning cable bores through obstructions. It is highly effective for retrieving solid objects (like children's toys or wipes) and punching a relief channel through thick tree root dams. However, a spinning blade only cuts a path the diameter of the blade itself, leaving substantial root remnants and sticky grease deposits clinging to the pipe walls.

Hydro jetting utilizes a heavy-duty triplex plunger pump to blast water through a flexible high-pressure hose at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI and 12 to 18 gallons per minute. At the tip of the hose, a specialized stainless steel nozzle discharges one forward penetrating jet and multiple rear-facing propulsion jets.

As the rear jets propel the hose forward through the sewer line, the intense hydraulic force acts like a laser, slicing hair-thin tree root hairs flush with the pipe joint, shearing rock-hard mineral scale, and completely emulsifying hardened cooking grease into liquid slush that washes harmlessly out to the city main. Hydro jetting cleans the entire inner circumference of the pipe back to its original factory flow capacity.

Snaking is ideal for: minor branch line clogs, immediate emergency relief when water is backing up into showers, retrieving foreign objects, or clearing fragile, heavily decayed cast iron drain stacks that cannot withstand hydraulic pressures.

Hydro jetting is mandatory for: recurring main line tree root intrusion, restaurant or commercial kitchen grease lines, heavy mineral descaling, and pre-cleaning sewer pipes prior to trenchless CIPP epoxy lining. Hydro jetting provides results that typically last three to four times longer than basic cabling.

While hydro jetting is exceptionally powerful, it must be performed responsibly. Introducing 4,000 PSI into a sewer pipe that has already suffered a structural collapse, large offset joint, or paper-thin channel rot can wash away supporting soil and cause total pipe failure.
