Frozen or Burst Pipe? What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives

When sub-zero Arctic air descends along the Colorado Front Range, water trapped inside uninsulated exterior walls, crawl spaces, and drafty basements can freeze solid in just a few hours. If you turn on a kitchen or bathroom faucet and nothing emerges—or worse, if you hear pressurized water spraying behind drywall or ceiling tiles—every second counts. The single most urgent action is to shut off the main water valve immediately.

Relieving this pressure through an open tap often prevents an intact section from splitting while the ice melts.

Never use a propane blowtorch, kerosene space heater, charcoal burner, or open flame device to thaw frozen pipes. Open flames are the leading cause of winter residential fires across Colorado, igniting dry wood framing, paper insulation vapor barriers, and interior cobwebs in seconds. Rapid, concentrated torch heat can also cause steam explosions inside sealed copper lines.

Instead, use safe, gentle convective heat. Direct a household hair dryer, heat lamp, or electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe. Always begin heating nearest the open faucet and gradually work backward toward the frozen blockage. This allows melting water to escape safely. Keep five-gallon buckets and towels ready directly below the frozen pipe: as soon as the ice plug melts, any existing hairline split will immediately begin leaking.
